Square Enix put out a large Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo for Nintendo Switch 2 in April 2026. I captured it in handheld mode, docked with a frame-rate overlay, and docked again with a high-quality 4K capture. There's no commentary in this one, just gameplay, so this is a short look at how the demo looks and plays.
- Captured from the April 2026 demo in handheld, docked (4K output) with an FPS overlay, and docked 4K without the overlay.
- Docked, the on-screen overlay read 30.0 FPS most of the time, with frequent 29.0 readings, one 28.0, and a short hitch down to 4.0.
- Handheld is filmed off the Switch 2's screen, so there's no overlay and no numbers of my own for handheld.
What's in the video
- Handheld mode (0:00): demo footage filmed off the Switch 2's screen.
- Docked with frame rate (3:22): a 4K-output lossless capture with an FPS and frame-time overlay.
- Docked 4K gameplay (7:11): a high-quality 4K-output capture with no overlay.
Handheld
I can't measure resolution or frame rate in handheld mode, so the handheld part is the game running on the screen. For outside testing, Digital Foundry's demo analysis reports that the Switch 2 demo targets 30 FPS, with handheld resolving between about 380p and 756p using DLSS reconstruction, and docked targeting 1080p with an internal floor around 540p. DF also notes short hitches and one-frame traversal stutters in places.

Docked (4K output) with frame rate
All the numbers here are what the on-screen frame-rate overlay read in my docked capture, checked every two seconds from 3:22 to 7:10. Through Kalm, the grasslands and combat, it read 30.0 FPS most of the time, with a lot of 29.0 mixed in. I also caught one 28.0, and a short hitch where the overlay dropped to 4.0 before snapping back to 30 — the kind of one-beat stall DF called out in the demo rather than a long soft stretch.

Digital Foundry puts docked demo resolution in a dynamic 540p to 1080p range reconstructed with DLSS, so the 4K here is the output to the TV, not the internal render resolution.
Docked 4K gameplay
The last part is a higher-quality 4K-output capture with no overlay, for a cleaner look at the image docked on a big screen.
