Digital Foundry put Resident Evil 4 on Switch 2 through its paces ahead of the October 16 release, and the short version is that it looks a lot closer to the PS4 version than the PS5 one.
Docked, DF says the game renders at 540p internally and uses Nvidia's DLSS to upscale. It hits 60fps in quieter scenes, but heavy combat and demanding areas drop into the 40s and 50s. Handheld mode goes down to 360p, again with DLSS, and normally runs in the 40 to 50fps range, with VRR helping smooth things out.
There are cuts versus PS5: no screen-space reflections, some light sources without shadows, less foliage and lower-res textures in places. DF does say Switch 2 beats the PS4 on texture detail thanks to faster storage and more memory, and they'd like to see a 30 or 40fps cap added for more stable frame rates.
RE2 and RE3 got a shorter look, but DF says they run higher than RE4 in both modes, with a loose 60fps lock and only minor dips.
My take: for a game this demanding, that's pretty playable on a hybrid, especially in handheld where you're sitting in the 40s most of the time. DF says it's still the best portable Resident Evil outside of a high-powered PC handheld, and I'd love to put that to the test. Are you picking these up on Switch 2?
