The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is now available, starting at $1,299 for the handheld on its own. A $2,499 bundle adds ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses, a custom dbrand Killswitch case and a Pelican Protector case. HotHardware reports it's in stock at Best Buy and the ASUS webstore, and ASUS says the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X stay on sale at $599 and $999.
ASUS made the X20 for the 20th anniversary of Republic of Gamers, with a translucent black chassis and gold-accented internals. The main hardware change is the screen: a 7.4-inch OLED that HotHardware lists at 1920x1080, 120Hz and up to 1,400 nits, replacing the 7-inch IPS panel on the Xbox Ally X. ASUS also added TMR joysticks with a 3% dead zone and a D-pad that switches between four-way and eight-way without tools. HotHardware adds a microSD Express slot and DisplayPort 2.1.
The core specs don't change, though. Per HotHardware, the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of LPDDR5X, 1TB SSD and 80Wh battery are the same as the Xbox Ally X. The Verge's Sean Hollister hasn't published his full review yet, but his quick take calls it "so refined" while saying it's "not necessarily the new champ."
My take: it's the same chip and battery as the Ally X for $300 more, so you're paying for the OLED, the sticks and the anniversary design. The OLED is what I'd most want to see in person. Is the X20 worth it to you, or is the Ally X still the smarter buy? Let me know on X or in the YouTube comments.
